Trying to find the right bike in Tel Aviv

I don't have an electric bike yet, but I plan on either purchasing one on Amazon, or buy one here in Tel Aviv, or order a conversion kit from Ampedbikes in the states. Ezee kits are an option too.

I just moved here , and I've been all over Tel Aviv looking for the right electric bike or scooter, but I can't seem to decide on the right one.

Here are a couple of E-bikes I have been looking at:

Kooper Scooter: Not really a bike, but I really like the scooter and I did take it for a test ride. The model I tested was called the Duper. It has dual hub 350w motors. I like the handling and the style of the scooter, and the dual motors let me cruise at about 30kph! The cost is about $4078 US dollars or 15500 Shekels! The lower end model cost $2605 with one motor in the back without the seat and the one with a seat will cost $2789. Kooper Scooter, Urban Legend,

DNA BikesNA http://i.imgur.com/e5QeF.jpg

This one cost only 5800 shekels or $1526 US. Still pricey for me, but I haven't seen a quality E-bike here for less than $1500. This bike only has a 250W motor in the back, but it does have some nice disc brakes and the handling is pretty good. It can travel between 25-30km on one charge, and go up to 25mph.

Greenwheels: They have some good bikes, but I noticed the quality of the bikes aren't as good as some other places. The Shikko is almost the same as the DNA Bike 5500 Shekels\ $1447 US

Volto E-bikes:Volto Sturdy - made in china with a 250w motor. Handling is good. I like the fact that the rear rack is part of the bike frame instead of a seperate piece. 5800 shekels or $1526 US: seems sturdy, and the salesman was super friendly.

My other option is to order a kit from Ampedbikes from the US and install it on my Mountain bike. Cost $300 plus battery 374 = $674.00 Mt Bike
E-Bike kit.

to anyone out there thinking of buying an e plus electric bike. DON'T. I bought a 1000W 36 V complete e bike from eplusbikes and it's a big downer. The NiMh battery pack after 4 months of use can only do about 5 miles. Company claims 20 miles. Numreous error codes show up under wet, cold weather conditions. No Customer support. Can't purchase their auxialary lipo battery pack.
Their internet site offers false information and they make no attempt to contact YOU the consumer so BEWARE!

Hi everyone, thanks for all the great info on this forum! I've built a push trailer using MY1020motor, that's too heavy and low on torque, but still does 15mph for 15miles with too much pedaling uphills. I'd like to put a 50t sprocket on the rear cluster of 24" wheel, and drive it direct from 10T motor sprocket. Any info would help cut down on trial and error problems.

I bought a 36V motor from the store<http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/904105>, I told the seller that i didn't installing the bike yet, so I asked many questions about the motor, yesterday, i received a mail from the seller, but I didn't understand what he was saying, if these words right ? I don't know the quality of my motor is good or not, I have spent $65 on the motor(without freight).here is the mail from the seller:

Electric current draw is very low when the motor is unloaded. The motor has a high efficiency; with an input of 12A and a torsion of 20 N.m, efficiency is

still over 75%. The motor provides smooth powerful starts and strong climbing performance, with little noise and high reliability. Prices are slightly higher

than brushless low speed motors. Freewheeling and light weight make it easy to pedal without electric power. The noise is low,the and the fault rate is quite

low. At present we have a great development that the system of motor and controller has no location sensor, that is no hall in the motor. This kind of motor

just uses three wires and is very long life and has higher efficiency. And we have many experiences to fit kinds of requests.

Figured I would start actually writing down and logging some research, my successes, and I am sure failures, that I will have while doing this project so future green-greenies can either say, "Hell ya! I'll build from scratch!" or "Hell nah! I'll buy prebuilt and tinker with it later on!"

First I need to look for a tandem bike and a wheel hub motor that will work well with each other! I think I found a reasonably priced cruiser tandem, a Kent Dual Drive 21 Speed with nice 2.1" tires! Now just gotta do some research to see if I can get a 500-750W hub motor that will work with it, I am sure some are out there...somewhere! Going to check with E-BikeKit today to see if their 26" front motor hub wheel will be compatible with that fatty tire that is on the Kent, and if not, then the search is on! :z58:

So, although the official start of my little journey begins today, 10/15/2010, I am not sure of where it will take me or when I will finish, but I am sure I am going to enjoy the ride! :z23:

Copied this Blog, about one of my postings on another Bicycle Forum.

"I was impressed by the thread Bicycle Safety - The Math of Speed. First, I was, most admiring, of the concise reasoning and mathematics, of the original author.

As I followed the thread, a pattern of objection, escalating towards, full fledged hostility, emerged. Beginning with simple disbelief, multiple antagonists, doggedly attacked, morphing into unreasoning, and ridiculous rantings! Now this is interesting!

Is it true that people fear what they can't understand? All the antagonists seemed to be of rather simplistic math, and reasoning, skills. The, seemingly, more intelligent responders merely agreed, posted appreciation, or briefly questioned some point, but the more modestly skilled, aggressively attacked with increasing hostility, and decreasing reasoning. To the point where their arguments denigrated into the realm of the ridiculously absurd.

Intriguing! Since the thread had gone dormant I re-posted a portion of the thread, and to my delight, snagged a protagonist. This person was nasty, like a Pit Bull, unfortunately, he lacked even the most basic addition and subtraction skills. I merely pointed out that he was misrepresenting Drkangels "The Math of Speed", and soon, I ... became the object of his attacks, dropping into insults and obscenities.

Sadly, I must admit that I began enjoying the witless banter, offering feign assistance and platitudes. Infuriating and frustrating the hapless protagonist, till he was too frustrated to continue, ... maybe gave himself a stroke?

From a Sociological viewpoint, it should be noted that this thread set a record for the most viewed! Over 15,000 views! As entertaining as it was for me, I'm curious as to the IQ's of the persons who found the thread so interesting. Were they interested in the original mathematical representations, or the conflict of the opposing viewpoints?"

It sounds like this thread might be a fun-interesting case study for either a Sociology or Psychology class. It seems "rich" with "twisted" psyche!"

Surviving the Rear Impact!

Absolutely the best solution to a rear impact scenario, requires good speed capability, constant awareness, and one piece of specialty equipment.

First you want to be traveling, as closely as possible, to the speed of the approaching vehicle.

Second you must have an awareness as to the velocity, angle, mass and surface composition of the vehicle. Sets of 4 mirrors, or more, recommended, if possible, arrange into a stereoscopic, full 3D configuration.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the one piece of specialty equipment! "Cyclists Downunder", (based, possibly, in Australia?), has begun marketing their "Octopi" line of cyclewear.

Just make sure that you are struck squarely from behind. If you are about to be hit, quickly swerve and position yourself directly towards the center of the vehicle, the car should knock the bicycle from under you and you should roll gracefully onto the hood and, or, windshield, where the Octopi suction cups should keep you safely secured. (Tip: As soon as you get stuck to the vehicle, rip off one, or both, windshield wipers! Some drivers will use them to try to knock you off. You can also beat them on the roof to get the drivers attention, in case he is sleeping, or just doesn't notice you.) Hopefully the car will come to a gentle stop and you can then safely get off. Much safer than rolling down the road at 30 mph or bouncing over the roof and landing, "who knows where"! (Tip: Please do not anger, or insult, the driver! You will probably need their help getting unstuck from the car!)

Warning! Speed is important! 20 mph bike speed is optimal to be hit by a 30 mph car.
Slower can result in fairly severe injuries.
Faster and you might not be bounced onto the top of the car, you might have to jump backwards, timing is critical! Warning! Be careful, some a__hole drivers will approach like they are going to hit you, then ... slow down, just before impact. If not aware you might jump, and miss, ... then where would you be? ... Embarrassed! ... ???

Large trucks can be very tricky. Most don't have a nice hood to get stuck to.
1. Ideally, you must be going 10 mph slower than the truck.
2. Timing is critical, you must jump straight up just as you are being run over.
3. You must hit the windshield squarely, with enough body, to stick. Grills-radiators don't work well with suction cups!
4. Most important, rip off them wipers! Big trucks might have super duty wipers capable of scraping you off, like a bug!

This is a skill! Like any skill it requires practice. You should have a friend try to run you down, a few times, just so you can get good at being safer.

Oh, ... Make sure you have a good supply of bikes handy.

P.S. Be prepared for being hit by the, proverbial, "Redneck Pickup". Keep an Armageddon bag handy. Recommend couple bottles of water, sun screen, some granola bars, "Space blanket" ... anything you might need in case they drive around with you stuck to their hood, for a few days.

Disclaimer:
Before trying this you must read "Epitaphs of the Cyclists Downunder"

The Need, the Need For Speed = Safety!!!

Faster is Safer!
My Sister-in-Law just couldn't understand, why I felt that going faster, on a bicycle, is safer. "30 mph!" ... "You're gonna kill your self!". ... :z21:

I feel it necessary to prove that faster is safer. Let me try a mathematical approach.

First, let me qualify;
1. My riding is in an urban area and 95% of the streets-roads are 30 mph limit.
2. I ride on the right side of the road, going "with traffic", as is the legal method.

For ease of math - Let's figure a 10 mile trip, w/traffic @ 10 cars per minute.

At 10 mph -
60min x 10cars - 1/3 (for 1/3 speed of cars) = 400 cars passing you at 20mph.

At 20 mph -
30min x 10cars - 2/3 (for 2/3 speed of cars) = 100 cars passing you at 10mph.
AND, cars have twice the time to notice, and avoid, you!

At 30 mph -
20min x 10cars - 3/3 (for 3/3 speed of cars) = 0 cars passing you!

(Math is simplified - but "sound")

If you concede that most urban bike accidents are directly related to passing cars, then 20 mph would be (4 times safer than 10 mph) x (twice the time the, approaching, driver has to see biker) = 8 times as safe @ 20 mph, compared to 10 mph!

A__hole factor! Everyone might agree that, possibly, 1 in 100 motorists, (conservative estimate!), are AHs toward bicyclists, Going 10 mph you'll get passed by 4, only 1 @ 20 mph and at 30 mph you might never encounter 1. :z44:
